When I was a little girl my mother used to tell me "It's more blessed to give than to receive". Although I love getting presents, I also really enjoy seeing my family unwrapping things I have chosen for them.
God makes it clear to us in the Bible that we must give: not just money to help alleviate poverty and fight disease but our time, our prayers and our love. See Luke chapter 6 verse 38. Everyone appreciates kind words...someone to listen when they want to talk about their problems...little "thank you" notes and gifts. In Matthew chapter 10 verses 40 to 42 we learn that even giving a drink of cold water to someone who is thirsty pleases God.
Jesus Christ was the kindest, most compassionate person in the world and He was a gift from God. The Lord gave us HIMSELF through His Son and died for US so that we can pass from this life into Heaven (John chapter 3 verse 16). What an amazing gift!! However, receiving is important too. It's only good manners to graciously accept presents or a helping hand. God wants us to RECEIVE the gift of His Son. It's not enough to read about it, like a story. We must accept the gift, thank Him for it, then ask Jesus to come and live in our hearts...and spend the rest of our lives aiming to be more like Him.
